يمثل إنتاج الحرير الطبيعي جزء من الدخل القومي لبعض البلاد مثل الصين والهند وغيرها كما كان يمثل في الماضي لليابان وكوريا الجنوبية غيران التقدم الاقتصادي ادي الي توقف تلك الدول عن انتاج الحرير حيث يناسب إنتاج الحرير الدوذل النامية . ان للحرير الطبيعي اهمية من كل الجوانب الاقتصادية، الاجتماعية، التنموية، والبيئية حيث أن تلك المشروعات تعتبر مشروعات مثالية لإقامتها في البيئة المصرية بصفة عامة وبالمناطق النائية على وجه الخصوص . يشتمل إنتاج الحرير الطبيعى على تخصات عدة هندسة الأنسجة، زراعة التوت، تربية دود القز، حل الحرير الطبيعي من الشرانق، ونماذج من منتجات نسجية ممه يجعلع منسبا لاقامة مشروعا صغيرة ومتوسطة ، كما يقوم الإنتاج على عدة مراحل تكون متكاملة ومتداخلة زمنياً . يهدف هذا المشروع البحثي إلى إنشاء سبعة وحدات كنموذج لإنتاج الحرير الطبيعي في محافظة سوهاج وهي: 1) زراعة أشجار الحرير ٢) وحدة حل الحرير،٣) وحدة المنتجات الغذائية من التوت، ٤) معمل لإكثار أشجار النخيل، بالإضافة إلى نباتات تمثل مصدراً للصبغات الطبيعية، ٥) صباغة وطباعة منسوجات بصبغات طبيعية مستخلصة من التوت ونباتات طبيعية، ٦) إستخلاص الطبقة الصمغية (السيريسين) من الشرانق أو الحرير الطبيعي ٧) وحدة للنسيج.

Natural silk production constitutes part of the national income in several countries such as China and India, and in the past it was also significant in Japan and South Korea. However, economic advancement has led these latter countries to stop producing silk, as silk production is more suitable for developing nations. Natural silk holds importance from economic, social, developmental, and environmental perspectives, and such projects are considered ideal for implementation in the Egyptian environment in general, and in remote areas in particular. The production of natural silk involves several disciplines—such as sericulture engineering, mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing, reeling silk from cocoons, and producing various textile models—making it suitable for establishing small and medium-sized enterprises. Moreover, the production process consists of several stages that are integrated and temporally interconnected. The main target of this project is to establish Seven special units for: 1) mulberry cultivation 2)silk realing, 3) food-stuffs from berry, 4) propagation of palm trees as well as some plants which are used in extraction of natural dyes, 5) unit of natural dye laboratory for textiles coloration using natural dyes extracted from mulberry and other plants, and 6) extraction of sericin from cocoons and natural silk.7) textile weaving .
